S’more Please!
I love nothing more than a s’more by the campfire. S’mores have been the go-to treat for campers since, well, forever. The gooey marshmallow and chocolate between two graham crackers has been a favorite for decades. Lately though, I have been hearing more variations for this classic treat. Everything from s’more “cheese balls” to s’more stuffed waffles to s’more sushi (yup, you read that right s’more sushi). Some of these variations look super labor intensive, beautiful even, but a lot of work.
Abby and I decided that we wanted to try some of these different s’mores. We compiled a huge list and narrowed it down to 6 that we wanted to try on a recent camping trip. Here are the results:
Chocolate Chip Cookie S’mores
This one was a no-brainer to try. Abby and I are known (by our friends and family) for making REALLY good chocolate chip cookies. To make these s’mores you just replace the graham cracker with the chocolate chip cookies. Now, because our cookies are so good (sorry to toot our own horn here but they are really that good) it may give these s’mores an unfair advantage.
Wow! These are awesome!!! The overwhelming consensus was that these were the best! The cookies were soft and I think that makes the difference. If they were crunchy chocolate chip cookies I don’t think that they would have been as good.
Candied Bacon S’mores
I have to admit, I was a little concerned about this one. First, bacon on a s’more? Second, candied bacon? What is THAT? Well, all you need to do is lay out the bacon on a foil covered cookie sheet. Coat the bacon with brown sugar and bake it at 400° for 15 – 25 minutes. The bacon is done when it is crispy. This is more than I am usually up for while enjoying an evening by a campfire but I HAD to try it. So we prepared the bacon at home and put it in the refrigerator.
To make these s’mores you just make a traditional s’more and add the candied bacon.
Hmmm. Different. Not terrible but not great either. We can now say that we have made candied bacon and tried a candied bacon s’more but we don’t need to take the time to do it again.
Peanut Butter Cup S’mores
Peanut Butter Cups are a staple in our house. We always have some around. Graham crackers, peanut butter cups, and marshmallows complete these s’mores.
Well, the peanut butter cup is so dense that it doesn’t really melt when the marshmallow is added. Don’t get me wrong. It is good. Honestly, I could have just gone with two peanut butter cups with a marshmallow in between.
Striped Cookie S’mores
These are the most simple s’mores to make. Two fudge stripe cookies and the marshmallow in between.
These were fine. They got the job done but feels like they are missing something. I like these cookies too. Just not as a s’more.
Candy Bar S’more
We used Snickers for this s’more. You could use any candy bar you like though.
I actually couldn’t even tell that these were not the traditional s’more until I got a peanut from the candy bar.
Oreo S’more
These are another version of a s’more that you could make if you are in a pinch and don’t have the traditional ingredients. To make these, just open up an Oreo and put the marshmallow in between.
These were actually really good. They were like a gooey, extra double stuffed Oreo.
Overall, my favorite (Fred’s too) from this list, is the chocolate chip cookie s’more. They are easier to eat than a traditional s’more because the cookie is soft and doesn’t crumble like a graham cracker. Abby’s winner is the peanut butter cup s’more. Shocking. She LOVES peanut butter cups.
This was such a fun experiment! We are already compiling a new list of s’mores to try. Have you heard of any fun recipes???
Happy Camping!!
